In Andorra, Sant Jordi (Saint George’s Day) is celebrated every April 23rd. Much like in neighbouring Catalonia, it is one of the most cherished days of the year, blending romantic tradition with a massive celebration of literature.
The Legend
The celebration is rooted in the legend of Saint George, the knight who rescued a princess by slaying a dragon. According to the tale, a beautiful red rosebush sprouted from the spot where the dragon's blood hit the ground. Sant Jordi plucked the most beautiful rose and gave it to the princess, a gesture that remains at the heart of the holiday today.
It is often described as the "Andorran Valentine’s Day," though it feels much more like a collective outdoor party for the entire community.
The "Book and the Rose" Tradition
The day is centered around a unique exchange of gifts:
The Rose: Traditionally, men give a red rose to the women in their lives. The rose often comes with a sprig of wheat (symbolising fertility) and is tied with the colours of the Andorran flag.
The Book: In return, women traditionally give a book to the men.
Modern Twist: Today, these traditions are much more fluid—everyone gives and receives both books and roses among friends, family, and colleagues. And so Melou’s Adventures fits into both gifts for kids but also for your art enthusiast loved ones and anyone wanting to learn one of the languages that these easy to read books are written in: English, Catalan and Spanish.
Where you’ll find Melou’s Adventures
La Fira de Sant Jordi: Thursday the 23rd of April, from 10:00 to 20:00 at the Plaça del Poble in Andorra la Vella (see our calendar view here). You'll find dozens of stalls from local bookstores and florists. Search for the Writer’s Circle of Andorra, I’ll post on instagram tomorrow when I know our exact location. I'll be there the whole day (with a few necessary food and beverage breaks), so please pop by and say hi! Furthermore, I’ll be happy to sign any book purchases with a personalised dedication.
Destil·leria Fora: Our friends at Fora Gin have kindly added Melou's Adventures books to their display, so if you prefer to stay away from the crowds and get closer to nature, you can pop by there for a nice relaxing drink and enjoy Melou's Adventures.
