“Introduction to Academic Drawing”

Jasmine Lilleby

Updated: Feb 22

I have decided to share my knowledge of the type of art training I received at the Barcelona Academy of Art.

In the current fast paced world we live in, the process of learning these skills can be very calming and patience inducing. And seeing your creations start to take shape through this patience, is extremely rewarding.

Very early on in my academic training I noticed how I was able to get into a “flow state”, or like I also like to describe it, a trance. Here’s a quick quote which I find sums it up nicely to me:

“There’s this focus that, once it becomes intense, leads to a sense of ecstasy, a sense of clarity: you know exactly what you want to do from one moment to the other; you get immediate feedback,” Psychologist Mihály Csikszentmihalyi  https://www.headspace.com/articles/flow-state

A recent study also shows that flow helps people stay resilient in the face of adversity. Part of this is because flow can help refocus thoughts away from something stressful to something enjoyable. In fact, studies have shown that experiencing flow can help guard against depression and burnout. https://www.ucdavis.edu/curiosity/blog/research-shows-people-who-have-flow-regular-part-their-lives-are-happier-and-less-likely-focus

We will start with a simple copy of a 2D image from the Charles Bargue method. Learning observation, measuring and drawing techniques. In a previous beginner 9 hour workshop which was spread over 3 days, I allowed my pupils to move on to a second Bargue, however, I feel that this defeats the object of dedicating time and patience to achieve a better result. To give you an idea, when I was at the Barcelona Academy of Art, I wasn’t allowed to move on to my second Bargue until after about 24 hours working on it.

All materials will be provided, these will be a selection of pencils, putty rubber, plumb line and appropriate paper. Included in the price will be a selection of hot beverages and a snack to choose from during a quick break half way through. All you will have to do is turn up, eager to learn the skills required to create realistic drawings and paintings. It doesn’t matter how quickly you progress, you will feel a sense of achievement at whatever pace you are going.

The languages I can offer this training in is English, Spanish and Catalan.

The price of this 3 day (9 hour) workshop will be free to those who purchase a 90€ sketch from me (or I guess you could also see it as, you get a free piece of artwork by me for the price of a 90€ workshop). This way you will become a collector of my art if you aren’t one already.

In order for us to fit comfortably into my studio I will be limiting numbers to 8 attendees.

I plan to add life drawing and landscape sessions to my offer very soon, and I highly recommend that the attendees of these have assisted one of my “Introduction to Academic Drawing” sessions. I also have an idea to invite teachers from my academy to come at some point, and so knowing the basics beforehand will give you a head start. And it’s always good to learn from a variety of teachers, I can’t even begin to think how many Art teachers I’ve had over the years!

If you are serious about learning the techniques of the masters, then you really need to start with the basics. Without understanding the subtleties of what you are looking at, a drawing or painting will never look quite right. I shall be teaching progressive workshops as and when required, so this could be the start of an amazing journey for you!
